Mission Statement

The Catholic Committee of Appalachia abides in these mountains to bring to life the challenges set forth in both Appalachian Pastorals: "This Land is Home to Me-A Pastoral Message on Poverty and Powerlessness in Appalachia," and "At Home in the Web of Life-A Pastoral Message on Sustainable Community in Appalachia."

In light of our mission, CCA endeavors…

· to listen to the voices of Appalchia, including those of the natural world,
- to inform its members of issues relevant to the Church’s presence in Appalachia,
· to support through annual meetings, newsletters and workshops, church workers and local organizations who work to address the causes of poverty in Appalachia;
· And, to promote justice and dignity in accordance with Catholic social teaching. These issues include, but are not limited to education, health care, labor, economic development, and the fostering of sustainable communities.

The Catholic Committee of Appalachia is committed to dialogue and networking whenever possible.

Since 1970 the Catholic Committee of Appalachia has existed to serve Appalachia, her poor and the entire web of creation. As a membership based organization, CCA stands in solidarity with its members on issues of concern to them. Mountain top removal, labor, private prisons development, sustainable lifestyles and communities, poverty, health, clean water, racism and various life sustaining issues are among those which CCA has advanced.

The Catholic Committee of Appalachia:
· Publishes and distributes both Appalachian pastoral messages: "This Land is Home to Me" and "At Home in the Web of Life."
· Promotes Catholic social teaching in Appalachia
· Collaborates with Dioceses, local parishes and other oganizations to advance social and environmental justice.
- Offers spiritual and educational opportunities such as Pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Appalachia, the Cherokee Spirituality Retreat/Seminar, religious education materials on Climate Change and the Religious Leaders Forum on Mountaintop Removal.
