Cross in the Mountains

Purpose Statement:

We of various faith communities assemble to pray as residents of the mountains. Our communities live with fear caused by the devastation of extractive industries.  Using the traditional “Stations of the Cross” devotion as a basis, we pray for renewal of human and ecological communities throughout the mountains and for alternative work to bring greater diversity and choice for employment and energy sources. By raising the cross of Christ we are reminded that Earth belongs to God by creation and we are designated as stewards of creation.

THE KENTUCKY STATE CHAPTER sponsored the first “Cross in the Mountains” ecumenical Stations of the Cross prayer service in 2010. See the video above.

THE WEST VIRGINIA STATE CHAPTER co-sponsored a Cross in the Mountains event in 2015 along with Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition (OVEC), Christians for the Mountains, and WV Council of Churches. Click here to see pictures.

THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE CHAPTER has hosted the event each year since 2017, followed by a simple soup and sandwich lunch for up to 50 participants. Click here to see the 2019 program for their Ecological Way of the Cross.

THE WEST VIRGINIA CHAPTER and WILD CHURCH WEST VIRGINIA collaborated with HOUSE OF HAGAR CATHOLIC WORKER to celebrate an ecological and counter-imperial Way of the Cross for the Multitudes in East Wheeling during Holy Week of 2018.
